Why the Health Change Approach is important

Each year, there is growing recognition by governments and population health researchers that behaviour and lifestyle intervention play a critical role in improving community health outcomes. Simply educating patients is not sufficient to bring about long-term behaviour change and self-management.

Whilst people still need to know what to do to follow treatment advice and manage their health, it is vital they are ready, willing and able to take the actions necessary to bring about effective results.

The Health Change Approach is not counselling, therapy or coaching. It is a methodology that allows clinicians to more effectively use their existing skills to deliver health assessment, referral and treatment recommendations, case management, information and education to patients or clients in a time-efficient and clinically effective manner.

The Health Change Approach balances clinicians’ duty of care to provide evidence-based treatment and advice with patients’ rights to choose alternatives that suit their personal needs.
